"Rubbish" solution comes good!
A clever local product, Hideaways Bins’ Concelo kitchen waste bin, has been awarded a prestigious international Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design category for household appliances and household accessories.
Silverdale-based Hideaway Bins is run by daughter and father team Jamie and Allen Bertelsen, and Jamie says the goal was to design the best bin possible for the home owner.
“We set about this task after applying for and receiving a Callaghan Innovation grant towards research and development costs. It took seven years of research, development and testing but the result is a paradigm shift for a kitchen appliance that is used 20 to 30 times a day on average.”
Concelo is designed to overcome common kitchen waste issues – including grime and odours – and a key feature is its self-closing Active Lid, which is hidden from sight inside the cabinet, not only controlling odours but also offering true hands-free operation
The Clip & Clean trays, buckets and liner holders are made from stain-resistant polypropylene and can be removed quickly easily for cleaning.
Concelo also boasts specially-designed, smooth over-extension synchronised runners and is claimed to be the first premium waste bin that integrates concealed runners into its design, making it possible for the bin to be mounted at bench height for easy use for the homeowner at the same time as allowing the back bucket to be removed independently of the front bucket.

Tap & go approach to simple safety audit system
Auckland firm CheckmateNZ has developed a clever, scalable asset management / safety solution that’s as applicable to warehouse racking as it is to portable or other machinery or vehicles.
CheckmateNZ’s super-simple system ensures that any preventative maintenance has been actioned and provides an audit trail to help with work safety compliance.
An LED module or physical tag is affixed to the asset in question and, using NFC, users tap with their smartphone to check on the asset’s status as fit for use or requiring maintenance.
The Checkmate system allows the status of assets to be available instantly and company-wide if applicable and also means no stickers or paperwork can become detached from the asset or lost in the wind.
