Stats NZ's figures for January 2016 show actual dwelling consents marginally down by volume but +17% by value.

In terms of the actual value of building work consented in January 2016, compared with January 2015:

  • Residential work was up $112 million (+17%) to $756 million (see chart above).
  • Non-residential work was down $43 million (-12%) to $310 million. 

In January 2016, building consents were issued for 1,695 new dwellings (see chart below), comprising:

  • 1,286 houses (+145).
  • 89 apartments (-28).
  • 135 retirement village units (+9).
  • 185 townhouses, flats & units (-134).

Although the actual number of consents fell just 0.5%, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented fell 8.2%.
